10. 1962 Lotus Elite

The beautiful and small Elite was the result of Colin Chapman's (founder of Lotus) obsession with low weights of
cars. Not only was the body constructed from fiberglass, but so was the chassis in a similar method to modern day carbon fibre hypercars.

There were problems, fibreglass not being as strong as carbon fibre, quiet a few were horribly damaged. Yet the small 75bhp engine, low weight and efficient aerodynamics made this a great little car

9. 1972 Lotus Elan

5. 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso

The Lusso was the final version of the 250 model. It kept some of the aggressive racing lines of the SWB racer (above) yet some of the lines were smoothed out to give a more relaxing look. It was more of a Grand Tourer car, so was less aggressive in the driving too.

Pininfarina helped design this car leaving in the racing pedigree of Ferrari, yet the softer lines added some character to this stunning car. The Lusso pictured above was once owned by car nut Steve McQueen before his death.

4. 1937 Cord 810/812

The less well known Cord 810/812 series from the 1930's. It was way ahead of it's time with it's futuristic lines, Miura designer Marcello Gandini saying “it was an impressive design for the 1930s with solutions that would be seen on cars 20 years later.”

Using a V8 in front wheel drive was unheard of in the 30's, as well as hand cranked pop up head lights and a retractable roof. Sadly only 3000 of the 810 and supercharged 812's were ever produced.

3. 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 Berlinetta

Like the 250 GT Lusso, the 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta was a Grand Tourer. Designed to be comfy over long distances, but with serious power and speed if you needed it derived from Ferrari race
cars.

Taking it's most basic lines from the classic 250 GTO, it was obviously aggressive, yet beautiful in it. A technological masterpiece, in a beautiful skin. "It was a fast as it was beautiful."

2. 1952 Jaguar XK120

It seems an age away from it's 10 year younger E Type brother, but the XK120 is simply stunning. Jaguar's first post war sports car, this captured the hearts of many after many years of depressing war. It had a simply look, yet the lines made for a fun drive.

It was, like all the cars in the list, technogically marvelous, he straight six became a solid engine for Jaguar for years to come. The style of the long bonnet and short rear end also did well for Jaguar (see E Type) and this car set them up nicely for 50 years of amazing

The Basant Festival hails the start of spring. Kite-fliers in Lahore’s old town take to their rooftops and use strings coated with glass to cut the competition from the sky. Keep your head tilted skyward to glimpse the vibrant-coloured kites.

For those wanting to get a piece of the action, Lahore’s shops are full of kites, so you can pick one up and claim your slice of the sky.

The District Flying Association has announced Basant would be celebrated on February 20 and 21, a private TV channel reported on Sunday. Secretary Sheikh Salim, said Basant would be celebrated in pursuance of the safety measures planned by the government. Salim said kites would be available in the city from February 5 onwards. However, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the Punjab Assembly had not given permission for Basant celebrations.

Sources in the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) claimed that all preparations have been done to announce the festival and the city government was just waiting for the final nod of the government. The sources said strict monitoring of the event was also planned by the CDGL to avoid injuries and loss of life and property at hands of kite lovers.

The sources in CDGL revealed that the Chief Secretary Punjab chaired a high level meeting here Sunday to discuss the issue of Basant. They said no final decision has so far been taken but the office-bearers of All Pakistan Kite Flying Association were of the view that the government was going to allow a two-day festivity.

They said Punjab Governor Salman Taseer had already expressed his approval for celebrating Basant. The sources revealed that All Pakistan Kite Flying Association (APKFA) secretary general has already submitted a written application to the CDGL for announcing a two day Basant festival in the provincial capital in the third week of March 2009.

The sources said the tentative dates, which the association wanted were March 14 and 15, 2009. The sources said the association has also requested the CDGL to lift the ongoing ban on the kite and twine-making in the provincial capital so that kites and twine making be started to ensure their smooth availability in the market before the festival. Following an increase in throat-slashing incidents due to thick and strong twines, Basant, which is known as the traditional festival of Lahore, was banned in 2005.

Dozens of youths as well as children were killed while many sustained serious injuries in the year 2005 and 2006. Police sources said about seven people including minor children were killed in the year 2007 due to throat-slashing incidents.

The colourful event of Basant also faced opposition from Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) and its distribution companies mainly the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) as kite flying also resulted in frequent power tripping besides damaging the sensitive installations of Wapda and its companies.

After the Apex Court banned sale and purchase of kites and twine, the Punjab government also banned the activity and started carrying out crackdowns on shops selling kites and twines as well as cases were also registered against kite flyers, kite and twine makers and sellers.

On the other hand, the kite lovers, despite various hardships continued to refute the ban and the festival of skies was celebrated in various cities of the province recently. The cities where Basant festival was celebrated officially included Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Islamabad, Quetta, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Sheikhupura and Sharaqpur Sharif while the residents of Gujrat has announced to celebrate the festival on March 5 and 6, 2009. The sources said City District Governments of Rawalpindi and Sialkot wanted to follow the CDG Lahore.

Sheikh Saleem, Secretary General APKFA while talking with The News said that he has submitted a formal application to the government to allow Basant festival on March 14 and 15, 2009. Talking about the safety of human lives, he said the association has proposed to the government to not allow making, sale and use of think twine during the festival and strict action should be taken against the violators.

“Registration of sellers of kites and twine will be done through the APKFA, which will get affidavits from the license seekers to not sale and use think twine (more than 2 number),” he said. He further said that the association has also asked the government to ban use of twine on Charkhi and anyone using Charkhis would be handled strictly.

He said twine would only be used in its old method (Pina-round ball). Giving logic, he said twine makers used machines to wrap thick twine on Charkhi, which they cannot on a Pina manually. Besides this thick twine cannot be used in more quantity on Pina as it is used on Charkhi, he maintained and added that thick twine was the main cause of throat-slashing incidents. He also claimed that the APKFA has also suggested the government to not allow sale of kites bigger than 2-1/2 Tawa gudda and 5 Gith Patang. He said these sizes of kites did not need thick twine for flying.

Honestly I think every actor who is a part of Bollywood wants to win. As far as I am concerned, I would say that I am not used to winning awards for the Best Actress, though I have put in as many as six years in the film industry ever since I had made my debut with Kaizad Gustad’s ‘Boom’. All that I would say is I am happy even when I am nominated for the award. I cannot complain, because I have won rewards at the box office with my films clicking in a big way consecutively in the last few years.

You have to your credit quiet a few hit numbers as an actress. To what extent do you think you deserve the credit for a hit number, like say ‘Kiss Me’ in the film ‘Race’?
I do not like controversies though fortunately or unfortunately, controversy has become my middle name in the industry, whether I want it or not. I agree to dance to a number only after I listen to it and I am convinced that it is catchy, foot -tapping and easy to the ear. Hence the entire credit for making the song a hit ought to go not to me who just performs to the number, but to the lyricist and the composer.

Do you agree that you are hot and sexy?
Personally I do not think that I am hot and sexy. I try not to disappoint the audiences who come to watch me in my film. To click in Bollywood, besides the fact that you have to have talent in an abundant measure, you should also have your own appeal. You should have something special. Every actress has her own plus point to woo the audiences.

What according to you is your plus point as an actress?
If Vidya Balan is known for her ethnic roles, I am known for my fun roles. Each of us has our own place in the sun as far as Bollywood is concerned and we are not at all competing with one another.

Who do you think deserves the award besides you this year?
Though I have been nominated for the Best Actress award by Filmfare this year, I do not say that I alone deserve the award. If you were to ask me who I would nominate for the Best Actress Award besides me, I’d say that Priyanka Chopra deserves it for her performance in ‘Kaminey’. I’d also pick on Vidya Balan for her performance in ‘Paa’.

The authorities reasoned that they would not be able to control the inmates if she was allowed in. This made Rakhi upset as she claimed that she had the necessary permission to go enter the jail. But her plea fell on deaf ears and Rakhi’s request was turned down. “This is really ridiculous. If big stars like Madhuri Dixit want to come here, they are welcomed. But if Rakhi Sawant tries to do the same, she is not allowed, a furious Rakhi exclaimed.

Ever wondered what are the most expensive places in the world to live? Everyone knows that it costs more to live in some places than others, but just what is the most expensive city in the world to live in. This is a list of the 10 cities in the world where it is most expensive to live in early 2009 as defined by the Economist, although this will most likely change in line with regional economic changes and currency fluctuations.
10. Singapore

Singapore is both a city and country located in south east Asia. The city of just under 5 million people takes up the majority of the country of 710km2, leading to an extremely high population density of almost 7000 people per km2. It is located on a small island, which lies in one of the busiest waterways in the world which connects east Asia with south Asia, Africa and Europe. The city first started to grow to prominence under European rule because of it's high strategic importance and the city has continued to grow in stature since independence. The city has an extremely strong economy based it's business friendly policies leading to many international corporations having a base here. There is also a thriving high-tech manufacturing part to the economy, and the Port of Singapore is one of the world's busiest ports, particularly in the transhipment of goods. This thriving economy combined with lack of space for expansion leads to Singapore being the tenth most expensive city in the world to live.

9. Geneva

Geneva is a city nestled between Lake Geneva and The Alps in Switzerland. Although most of the city is in Switzerland, due to the high cost of living in the city proper many people commute in from nearby France. Geneva is famous for being the location where the Geneva Conventions were signed, which govern the handling of prisoners of war. Geneva is also home to the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and many United Nations departments are also based here. In addition to being a major city in humanitarian terms, Geneva is also the 6th most important financial centre in the world. All of these factors, along with the fantastic location alongside Lake Geneva and a policy to preserve the city, leads to it having the ninth highest cost of living worldwide.

8. Frankfurt

Frankfurt is joint seventh most expensive city to live in along with Helsinki. Frankfurt is a city in Germany, and is located on the Main River, which leads to it's full name Frankfurt am Main. When Germany was divided, it was located in west Germany, and so with berlin isolated became the economic powerhouse of west Germany, and upon re-unification it retained this position. It is the largest financial centre of mainland Europe, and both the European and German central banks are located here, as well as the Frankfurt stock exchange which is one of the biggest in the world. All of this wealth leads to Frankfurt being the joint seventh most expensive city in the world to live in.

7. Helsinki

In terms of the cost of living, Helsinki is joint seventh most expensive along with Frankfurt. Helsinki is the capital city of Finland, and is located in the far south of the country next to the Gulf of Finland. Despite being at the south of Finland, it is still a very northerly city and so can get very cold in the winter. Helsinki is the economic centre of the Finnish economy, and this partly explains the high cost of living. Helsinki has traditionally had a large shipbuilding industry and this continues to this day, although there are now also more hi-tech industries such as Nokia which is located just outside the city. Along with other Scandinavian countries, Finland has a relatively high tax rate, and this combined with the large amount of wealth generated is probably what results in Helsinki having the joint seventh highest cost of living in the world.

Located in Switzerland, Zurich comes sixth on the list of most expensive cities in the world by living costs. Zurich is to Switzerland like New York is to the USA, it is the commercial capital of the country but not the political one. Zurich is home to many top educational institutions, and this helps ensure that the top minds in Switzerland and further afield come to live in Zurich, and it is likely that many of these will spend at least some of their working lives here. A large proportion of the Swiss economy is based on financial services, and many multinational companies such as UBS, Zurich Financial Services and Credit Suisse are based here. In addition, the population of Zurich is very diverse, and this potentially explains why many international companies, such as IBM, Google and Microsoft have facilities here. All of these factors mean that Zurich has a very strong economy, and this results in the 6th highest cost of living worldwide.

5. Oslo

The city in the world with the fifth highest cost of living is the Norwegian capital city of Oslo. Oslo is Norway's biggest city, both economically and by population. Norway is one of the most developed countries in the world, with a large income from a variety of sources. These include the large offshore oil and gas reserves, maritime engineering and insurance and tourism. Norway has one of the highest average wages for a country in the world, and Oslo has an average even higher than this national average. Due to the high average wage, linked to the fact that many basic commodities such as many foodstuffs are imported, leads to an extremely high cost of living. This is further exaggerated by the very high Norwegian tax rate. Finally there is large public opposition to both the development of the city itself with high-rise buildings and the surrounding areas, resulting in space becoming at a premium. All of these factors combine to make Oslo the fifth most expensive city in the world in which to live.

4. Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the fourth most expensive city in the world in which to live. Like Helsinki and Oslo which also appear in the top 10 most expensive cities in terms of cost of living, it too is the capital city of a Scandinavian country. In Copenhagen's case the country is Denmark, and like both Oslo and Helsinki, it is not only the political capital city but the dominant city in the country economically and culturally as well. Copenhagen is the location for many international head and regional offices, such as Maersk which has head offices in Copenhagen and Microsoft, for which Copenhagen provides the regional headquarters. Recently Copenhagen, and Denmark as a whole has seen massive growth, both domestically and internationally. For example, the largest wind turbine manufacturer, Vestas, is a Danish company. All of these factors combined lead to Copenhagen having an extremely strong economy, with the corresponding high wages, which results in it being in fourth position on the list of most expensive cities in terms of cost of living.

3. Paris

Paris is the capital city of France, and comes in third on the list of most expensive cities in the world. The city of Paris is a rather compact area, although the metropolitan area is much larger and includes many satellite towns. The central area of Paris, and the area with which this cost of living list deals with, refers solely to the city of Paris. Paris is famous for tourism, and whilst this generates a large amount of money for the local economy, it does lead to demands for less development of the older parts of the city. As such this leads to less modern space for both commerce and residences than many other cities, and this pushes up the cost of living. Another factor in the high cost of living is the strong economy of the Paris region, and therefore high average wage. Major industries in Paris include the previously mentioned tourism, as well as finance and high-tech manufacturing. All of these factors combine to give the city of Paris the third highest cost of living worldwide.

2. Osaka-Kobe

The second highest cost of living is for two linked cities in Japan - Osaka and Kobe. As with many Japanese cities, both of these have an extremely high population density, which leads to expensive housing and other costs. Both cities are very large with populations in excess of 1 million. In each city there are a number of different industries, with many large multinational companies having their headquarters in the respective cities. Examples of these include Mitsubishi, Mizuno, Panasonic, Sanyo and Sharp. There is also a relatively large financial industry in both cities, leading to high wages. The high cost of land, as well as high wages, combine to make the Osaka-Kobe region the second most expensive region in the world in which to live.

The Japanese capital city of Tokyo comes first on the list of most expensive cities to live in. In addition to being the top of the list of cities with the highest living costs, it is also the centre of the world's largest metropolitan area by both population and economy. This is probably what makes it the most expensive city in the world in which to live. The Tokyo stock exchange is one of the world's largest, and is the largest one in Japan. Many international companies are based in Tokyo, and yet more have regional offices in the city which leads to a lot of highly paid jobs. In addition, the large size of the population leads to massive demand for space, and this is further exacerbated by the fact that Tokyo is surrounded by the Bay of Tokyo and a lot of steep hills and mountains. All of these factors combine to make Tokyo the most expensive city in the world in which to live.
